History

Hereford Chamber Choir is a choir of mixed voices, founded in 1983, and its concept was based upon the need to provide:

  • an organisation of learning which will provide a platform to perform a broad spectrum of choral music to the highest possible standard,
  • a source of musical enjoyment for singers and audiences alike,
  • a vehicle for the encouragement and furtherance of young singers,
  • a medium with which to assist charitable causes in Hereford, the County and the wider world.

Preparations for our performances take place each Tuesday at 7.30pm, with rehearsals held in Holy Trinity Church, Whitecross Road, Hereford. Our Terms generally reflect those of schools; Autumn, Winter/Spring and Summer. The number of performances in a year amount to approximately five or so, with, on occasion, three at the end of the season, when we may visit areas in wider Herefordshire.

In 2006 the Choir had a very exciting and memorable visit to Munich where we were hosted by the Chor der Erlöserkirche which had been to Hereford, two years earlier. We also had the opportunity to sing with another fine choir, Art Capella, in Murnau.

2008 saw the celebration of the Choir’s 25th Anniversary and, during that year, we were privileged to be directed by Howard Seymour.  One of the first actions of the year was to appoint a President and we were greatly honoured that this Office was accepted by June Chase MBE.  There were three main concert dates during the year and two were shared performances with SGOS based in Preston.  Originally this was a student group formed by Howard some years ago and has continued to meet for special occasions.  The venues were St Francis Xavier, Hereford and St John’s Minster, Preston.  The climax of our year was the 25th Anniversary Celebration Concert, held on 5 July at Hereford Cathedral in aid of the Perpetual Trust.  This event was also marked by the first public performance of the specially commissioned ‘Hereford Jubilate’ by Andrew Carter.  Both he, our President, and their respective spouses were the Choir’s honoured guests at this and the previous evening’s celebration supper.
